Critism of the WW2 console beta

Incendiary shells ???

Not a flawless game yet, but it's nice to see a WW2 shooter with modern graphics. I find it silly that people are complaining about gender customization in multiplayer. I know women (in the western countries) didn't had combat roles, but MP is always player first. Some of the community are even complaining about the lack of

nazi symbols
in MP maps.

I really like the way the game looks

LowPolyOWG

Yep, Sledgehammer Games did a great job with the CoD engine this time. They did a huge rewrite of MW3's engine to give us Advanced Warfare.

Graphics and sounds are quite impressive  Looking at these videos, I can't help but draw comparisons to CoD 2, which was (and thus far, still is) my favourite WW2 shooter. Graphically, CoD WW2 is miles ahead of #2, but the gameplay in #2 (SP) was awesome. Will WW2 SP stack up in that regard?

I know these clips are all about the MP game, but if the points Drifter makes also apply to the single-player game, I won't be bothering with it.

I'm a bit put off by what he said about the game favouring sub-machine guns. The rifles are the weapons I enjoy using most in WW2 games - semi-autos like the American M1 Garand, the Russian SVT-40 and the German Walther Gewehr 41, and bolt-actions like the Russian Mosin-Nagant 1891, the German Mauser Karabiner 98k and the British Lee-Enfield. Iconic rifles like these were the weapons that saw the greatest action in the European theatre. Out of the SMGs, the Thompson, the Sten, the MP40 (though technically a machine pistol, hence MP - Maschinenpistole) and the ubiquitous PPSH-41 were widely used, but they were not the decisive weapons of the conflict. That honorific belongs to the rifles.

(However, it's good to see the M3 "Grease Gun" finally being featured in a WW2 game. That one is a greatly overlooked American weapon from the period. The Thompson usually gets all the SMG glory).

I have fond memories of all of those weapons from CoD 2. Altogether, I think there were about 30 or so different weapons you could use in that game (not all of them in any one mission, of course - you wouldn't find a Mosin-Nagant in Tunisia or a Lee-Enfield in Stalingrad :gnehe:). I also liked the heavier arms like the American Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) and the hard-hitting British Bren. The sounds may not have been hugely authentic, but all the weapons felt fantastic, and yet they all had a very distinct feel from one another.

I'm not crazy about the close-quarters nature of the thing either, though once again that could just apply to the MP maps. CoD 2 had a good mixture of open-area combat and close-quarters fighting.

I don't like, and never have, any kind of aiming-assist. I even turn off the centre-screen crosshairs in games which allow me to do so, so that hip-shooting takes greater skill and if I want to aim, I have to use the ironsights. I prefer the greater "realism" of that. Again, hopefully the aiming-assist will only be a MP thing, and maybe you'll be able to turn it off there too if you want. Drifter wasn't too clear on that.

So all in all, I'm not too enthusiastic about what I've learned so far, but then I'm only interested in the single player game, which might be a whole different story. But if it's anything like CoD World at War, the SP game will be tragically short, overly-scripted and ultimately unsatisfying.

Then again, it might be brilliant and I'll have a new WW2 fave 8)

According to Wikipedia, the game goes back to CoD1-style. No health regen, diffculty can no longer be selected and you can either kill enemies or capture them.

"Gameplay-wise, WWII is the first title since the original Call of Duty to not feature health regeneration in the campaign. Instead, players must rely on their medic squadmates to provide health packs, as well as other squad members to provide ammunition. Other squad members can spot enemies, revealing their position in form of silhouettes. In addition to the lack of resources in campaign, all players are in "Hardcore Mode" automatically, eliminating the campaign's difficulty settings. Enemy soldiers in the campaign can be captured, and wounded allies can be dragged to cover. Both of these actions, as well as killing enemies and completing objectives, add up to player's experience (XP) which can be increased and improve the character's skills. In some parts of the campaign, players will be able to control vehicles."

More beta info. Yes, you can pre-download it from Steam (19 GB) now and the beta is open for everyone.

So, frame rate is capped at 250 fps this time, previous CoDs were locked to 91 fps, except for Treyarch games. Specs looks very decent, seems to be well optimized. Only thing missing is multi-GPU support.

If there is going to be an SP version, I hope they make it better than the Battlefield SP game.

The beta is focused on the MP mode.

The guy in the still of that clip looks like Spears in Band of Brothers

LowPolyOWG

I think this game borrows elements from Band of Brothers. Michael Condrey, director at SHG is a fan of that.
