D_B, yes. I train them to level 4 bonding and then sell them. I only keep those 3 Arabians and Sweet Poor Thing. I literally "sold" the DLC horse for $0.00 today (yes, that option can be tricked to becomes available even though it normally states that the horse cannot be sold) to make room for a new Andalusian horse that I tamed today.

As Art said, the dropped hat isn't really there, it's back on your horse. So to test it, when I dropped the hat to put on the skull mask from the pagan ritual site, I went back to the horse, put on the hat again, and went back to the place I had dropped it and sure enough, I was wearing it and it was on the ground. Magic hat?!
