I have been using a fireplace insert for over 30 years. Because I live in the woods, I have essentially an unlimited supply of fuel. The insert allows one to deliver the exact amount of oxygen to the fire to modulate the flame.

Right now I am in my bed looking out the windows at the snowy landscape, and my fireplace insert is doing it's job downstairs in the living room.

Oh and here I thought we were going to get some serious discussion about heaters. You know in the 20's and 30's, a heater was a gun, so that might be relevant. Somehow.
