Rip your DVD collection...

... even protected DVD discs. As many of you know, I like to travel in my RV, but I really don't like to take my entire DVD collection with me. The solution: DVD Fab, a program that will rip your DVDs to your hard disc. At $50, it is a bargain for me because I can now take my favorite movies with me on the road with very little effort - I rip to iPad format, and it even takes care of uploading the files to the iPad (or other mobile player).

As I write, I'm ripping my Honeymooner's collection to the portable 1 tb hard drive - I'll be able to fit 2000 movies on that drive :-X

I've lost track of how many DVDs I have, but it should be around 1,500 (genuine original movies I really bought in a store). Enough to pack your RV up to the roof so you can't use it for anything else any more ;D

That would help me with my storage problem.. but I enjoy the real deal.. admiring cover art etc.. it's nice to have them. :)

Absolutely - all part of the ambiance. However, I can't count the number of times I've been on the road and wished that I'd brought a particular movie simply because I was in the mood for that title. ;)

Terrorbyte drive = The only copy of your RV's owners manual is on a portable hard drive that reads as "format unrecognized" when some vandal has preset all your radio stations at full volume to a marathon Beginning Tone Deaf Violinists station and stolen the on/off volume and tuning knobs. ;D

My goodness - I checked the ripping stats and using the CUDA technology of the nVidia card, it is ripping at 199 FPS and taking only about 10 minutes to rip a full length movie.

Wow indeed - and that's at full motion video (30 frames per second) being compressed to MP4 on the fly. The file size is 500 - 700 mb depending on the movie. All of this while I was watching another movie on a separate monitor, and with Excel 2007 and Word open.

After reading some posts here and at the System Rig Specs thread I`m seriously considering NOT purchase an i7 for my PC by the end of the year!

multi core (4-8) processors seems to be of use only when you are multitasking, otherwise, if only for gaming, a nice i5 or maybe i3 would do the trick very well. A "normal" quad core with high processing speed (2,6-2,8) is all I might need in addition to a good vid card and some 4 or more RAM with the obvious advantage of a lower price!

Sounds reasonable - the video card is all important, and is what makes the difference in all of the PCs I've tried. Of course, you can't leave out the processor and RAM considerations, but the video card would be top on my list.

After a quick check online, I begin to see that the money I can save going from an i7 to an i5 plus a few more pounds can get me a pretty good vid card, so I think that`d be the best choice in the near future!

Intel Core i7 (870) 2.93GHz - £249.00

Intel Core i5 650 / 3.2 GHz - £151.00

Roughly 100 pounds difference

Sapphire HD5770 1GB GDDR5 Graphics Card - £128.00

JRD, actually a high-end dual core is even better than a quad core. Should be a bargain these days, and the money saved could be put into an even better vid card. One of the best (value for money) is a Radeon HD 5850.

I'm not closing the deal yet... I'm just considering getting a not top notch processor and with the money I'd save, invest in a top notch vid card!

The Radeon 5000 series seems to be a blast... the GeForce 200 series too and both have good price range. As for the processor, Intel dual core sells for something between 70 and 90 pounds (again, after jut a quick search) and can be a great deal as well... but in the future, processing capability will make a difference whereas a Radeon 1GB vid card will certainly be good for gaming for a few years from now.

I'll start checking prices and brands/models more thoroughly and post at the Game Rig Specs thread! ;) 8) 8)

Here´s a little tip for you JRD, check out the just released GT 450 from Nvidia. It´s set to replace the 250 if I´m not mistaken and combined with the latest 260 drivers that are tailored for the 400 series of vidcards the should give you a decent bang for your £ or escudos (is that what you have in brazil?) ;)
