Looks like someone got bored with chess.

Indeed - kind of reminds me of the chess pieces in the Harry Potter movie.

It also reminds me a bit of the old "Battle Chess" game from about 20 years ago.

funny you mention that fragger...I'm picking up the soon to be released Battle Vs. Chess for my son and I to enjoy (see below).  It has regular chess games and some interesting variations on modes as well.  This Heroes game above does look interesting as well but I don't know anything about it.
