OFP -Red River

Just out of curiosity... has any of you guys who played OFP2:DR know anything about this Red River game?

It's a stand alone game, part of the Dragon Rising story line where you fight the same PLA army (Chinese) in another theater, this time it's Tadjikistan.

Man, it looks good  8)

I'd like to try it but due to my frustration with DR I'll pass this one till it goes for $$10 or less...

I only heard of something  related to OFP2 but never payed attention for the same reason you're not buying it now.

Looks cool, but the RPG had some problems.  At first I thought the player was hitting the wall in front of him because there was zero travel time for the rocket to target.  In one part the loading animation didn't w@&k properly because the rocket was invisible while loading.  Maybe just a slight glitch, but strange none the less.

However, looks like it is worth keeping an eye on.  :-X

I saw it had been released recently, that gave prompted me to try playing and completing Dragon Rising but didn't look into more as didn't want it to join my bunch of Unplayed titles on the shelf.

No doubt will get it after got the hang of not dying on the first mission of OFP:DR  ;)

If you really go for the secondary objectives, things get complicated a little. There is practically no chance to survive a close encounter. Neither for you nor an enemy. A burst from an assault rifle is deadly.  Who shoots first, wins, is the motto.  ...

Issuing your men orders such as Suppress while you flank or take pot shots at hidden foes helps... don't worry about your team mates too much, if you issue the right orders - not suicidal - you'll find the game more forgiving.

There's lots of cover in the areas you fight. Make sure they are protected and the rest is basically trial and error... after a while you know where enemies are coming from and moving from checkpoint to checkpoint is a matter of time (and patience  ::) )

I may try Red River eventually, but will sure wait for the prices to go down.  ;)

I purchased OFP:DR and only spent about an hour or so in it.  I just don't like commanding a group of guys - thought I would, but it turns out that it is too distracting.  In fact, I was thinking that this morning as I played FC2 - I appreciate the solitude as I travel.  :-()

I tried to play the original FP on the high recommendations of a friend who loved the game (US army guy), it was a shambles of a game in my opinion, buggy and extremely frustrating, I avoided DR like the plague.

This current iteration is getting alot of ad space on TV and in magazines, so I had wondered if it has become more commercialised, is it more user friendly, or is it the same frustrating quasi realistic, totally non-fun experience PZ?

I've never gone in for any of those team-commanding affairs. I tried one years ago, it might have been Rainbow Six, or something of that ilk, and I was less than impressed. Apart from the Tomb Raider-like graphics and klutzy team mates who could trip over their own boot laces, I just couldn't take to that kind of gaming - too much stuffing around with plans and not enough action. I'm like PZ, I enjoy being a lone wolf and not have to coddle or rely on a bunch of dumb pixel guys, especially when they pull great moves like trying to stare bad guys to death or bounce a grenade off the wall in front of them and blow themselves up (how the hell did they get to be commandos anyway? Must have been the instructor's day off). It's funny when the mercs in FC2 do stuff like that, not when your so-called "buddies" cause you to fail a mish because of it >:((

It may not have been Rainbow Six, but whatever it was, it sucked.

AI may have come a long way since then, but I'm still not crazy about those kinds of games.

That`s what I`m trying to find out as well  ????

I played the original FP and don`t recall any bug... frustrating? yes... unforgiving checkpoint system and the need of octopus-like arms and fingers to tell your team mates to duck. But overall I enjoyed that game.

I think one of the main plus points to the whole 'Team command' side is for when you are unable to play with mates online. I know in the case of ARMA2 there are many Teams / Groups who w@&k together in a realistic military sim style, some of he groups being exclusively made up of people who are ex-military of one sort or another.

I would imagine the team side of OFP:DR would w@&k better with friends but its good that you can practice solo without losing the rest of your fire-team.

Going to have to put some gaming hours in and really get to grips with, as currently my only points of reference are ARMA2 (which I love) and Battlefield Bad Company2 (which I strongly disliked).

I don't really remember, Fiach, it was over a year ago when it first was released.  However, I suspect your assumption is correct because I spent hardly any time in the game.

The only team controlling game I liked was ArmA2 because I could create scenarios where my guys would all pile into my WWII vehicles.  While scripting was kind of fun, the conversation on the radio seemed like a half dozen different guys were recorded to provide the voices - sounded kind of stupid.

I went through the entire game (that's where my quote came from, I wrote some sort of diary) but in the end all I remember is how I got stuck a couple of times, how I was disappointed to find out it wasn't open world, how I needed to give orders not in a tactical fashion but in a way that took into account how silly the AI was as in preventing them to play cannon fodder or ruin the mission for me (I don't need their help for that). The best thing was the lone sniper (custom) mission, however. I played that one a couple of times.
