Art, I was thinking the exact same thing about Blood Money as I was reading that post  :-X - probably has one of the more successful notoriety systems we've yet seen in a game, despite the fact that it was done on a "last generation" platform.

Yeah, I like those ideas as well, especially the factions/civilians/buddies angle. Say you have friends in one faction, and approach a guard post held by that faction, you wave the high sign and go through with no shots fired. But, maybe while you're away, the other faction attacks that guard post, and on your way back, you are attacked there. Maybe even if you arrive, they are still under attack, you help the faction you are allied with and get more cred from it. Then again, maybe you have to attack a place held by your faction allies and lose cred from that, or if you leave no survivors to tell who attacked them, and no evidence you were there, you don't lose cred.

Maybe you come upon a farm that civilians still hold, and you help them, maybe by getting them fuel for their vehicles or something, and you get a place to hide, get food, etc. If they are attacked by a faction, you can help them, or if it's the faction you have allied with, talk them out of attacking. I can see that kind of stuff getting more into the realm of what can happen in Fallout 3, and I haven't even played that game yet, just by reading the strat guide I can see that is one complex game, and maybe that might be too much for a more action-type game like FC3, but there should be more choice and consequences for those choices. How many posts did we see about the choice at the end of act one? And not to spoil it for new players use mouse to select text to see:

Maybe if I'd continued my programming days on the BBC Micro/Acorn Archimedes into the PC I could have gone for a career in software. Woulda been nice, but I couldn't pretend to have anywhere near the skills that the Montreal team who did Far Cry 2 have even if I had... I don't know if anyone here is a programmer, but is it that the ideas we are putting forward are too hard to acheive for game AI, or that no one in these teams has thought of them?

I can't believe that could be the case. Watching the vids on the official Ubi FC2 page, I noted they specifically talked about immersion and realism. For me, they did hit the target in most parts, some of the attention to detail is unprecedented!  :-X

But, either due to time constraints or other factors they left out some relatively small features that tend to break the involvement, for me at least.

It is way too optimistic to expect much of what I posted in my list to appear in a next release, but if I were to have 3 wishes for the next game engine, I'd say to them to make certain elements user controllable in the settings:

1. Respawn period (time dependent rather than area refresh)
2. Weapon accuracy (effectiveness of the crosshair zone for bullets)
3. Player sensing (precision with which enemy AI can narrow down your location)

Regarding 1, I know that it is due to how the whole game was built... in order to have a huge map like we have in FC2 without any load time and with seamless transition, the game loads each area as you get near to it, once you leave an area, whatever it contained is flushed out, so if you move away enough from an area for it to flush, as soon as you go back it will be as if you never been there, except for those large fuel tanks like you see in the northern airstrip or the post office.  :(

As for 2 and 3, I`m with you 110%, mate!!  :-X :-X

No news regarding FC3.. latest stuff is from November 2009. Incredible that they don't leak some new infos!

I saw a photo once of all the crew involved in developing FC2, it was something about 170 people (we discussed it here somewhere).

Imagine how many more games Ubi is developing right now! Games we know for sure will be out next year like Assassins Creed 3 and a few more sequels and even a new title or two to come.

I'm pretty sure all those guys are involved in more than one project at the same time (imagine 170 guys per game  :o ... no way), so it's fair to imagine a busy office in Montreal!

There must be a draft of FC3 in some manager's drawer. The question is:

Do they have a projection of sales showing FC3 as a profitable game compared to all other ongoing projects?

Maybe not in the near future due to a great number of complaints regarding FC2 on one side and also due to big hits like AC2 on the other side. So, my point is, after a few new games thrown in the market in the next two or three years, Far Cry 3 will be reassessed and maybe put on beta production.

I doubt we will hear of FC3 sooner than that!  :(

I think you're right.  FYI though, no AC3 next year.  It should be in 2012.  They stated they didn't want to go "COD" and do a game every year.  With Brotherhood this year, they don't want to saturate the market with AC games.

Swimming should involve some danger, how bout some nile crocodiles?

Walking should involve some danger, lions, hyennas?

And my biggest disappointment about FC2. No prone position? No lean from behine cover to shoot ?

Aw, c'mon  :) Nothing bad. The new PCGamer has a small blurb about FC3, that it's in development but no details. I would think it's at least a year away.
